Beyond Office Hours
Carthage students say it over and over again: The relationships they build with their professors are stronger than they imagined possible. At Carthage, faculty are passionate about teaching and make themselves available beyond their official office hours …
- Like when class ends and they refuse to leave until you understand that difficult concept.
- Or when their lunch break becomes your mock job interview.
- Or when they write you a stellar letter of recommendation to help you land that research position or get into your top-choice grad school.
At Carthage, your professors aren’t just experts at the front of the classroom. They become your mentors, coaches, cheerleaders, counselors, and friends.
“Carthage faculty have had a major impact on my life,” says graphic design major Azubiuke Whigham. “Knowing that I have mentors to reach out to for advice takes some of the pressure off of being a college student.”

Three adjectives I would use to describe Carthage faculty would be passionate, helpful, and well-rounded.
inspirational, charismatic, and motivating,
Authentic, talented, and caring.
Dedicated, challenging, but understanding.
Driven, passionate, and caring.
I think that Carthage faculty really strive to have personal connections with our students. Because only through developing that relationship, that level of trust, and that level of understanding, can our students really allow themselves to be vulnerable, and to try things that they might otherwise not be willing to try or might be afraid to try.
I don't think I could pick a favorite professor. I have so many people I could consider my favorite professor.
They make you feel so supported as a student, but also as a person, and they genuinely care about not only how you're doing in their class, but also how you're doing outside of the class. Like if you miss class, a lot of times we'll reach out to you.
Students' access to their professors is excellent. I think this is the big difference between a small liberal arts school and a large university. You really need to decide as a student, what's the best environment for you. If you want someone to know your name, then Carthage is the place to go.
So the Carthage faculty is an extraordinary one. And one of the most important pieces they bring to students is they are here because they love to teach. Carthage Professors love to be coaches and mentors and teachers.
Personal connection is really important to me, especially here at Carthage, because I would not be here if it weren't for the personal connections I had along the way through all of my education. And so in turn, I want to return that to my students to give them a personal connection, to collaborate with them, and to like send them out in the world to just be better humans.
And that's what is special about a small school is that I can look at you and say, "I believe in you. I know you can do this. Let's do it together."
