J-Term & Study Abroad
J-Term is a special month-long period of study at Carthage in which students take a single course on campus or around the world. Explore a subject outside your major, try something new like art or acting, or travel. Professors lead study tours to such destinations as Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Southern Africa, Sweden, and Honduras.
January doesn’t get all the mileage. Some month-long study tours are offered in June and August. Study abroad experiences can also last for a semester or even a whole year.
The opportunity is available to all majors, and students majoring in a foreign language are required to spend a semester abroad. Recent study abroad destinations include Costa Rica, Ecuador, Egypt, Greece, India, Ireland, and Japan.

Carthage students have opportunities to do study abroad of different durations anywhere from two weeks to a full year abroad. Study abroad is not just the academic experience in the classroom, it is daily life. It's navigating a new culture and a new language. So Study abroad really provides students with the chance to explore and develop skills and qualities that will come in handy throughout their lives and careers.
J-Term is very unique and I know some other schools have it, but I love the way Carthage does it. So it's a little like three and a half week term that we have in January. And you can either take a class, and you go to that class all five days a week for three hours, or even go on a short-term study-abroad trip.
My junior year, so this past j term, I got to go to Honduras, and we got to scuba dive and snorkel in Roatan, which has the second largest coral reef in the world. And it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. And I'm so grateful that I went to a school that has these opportunities.
So I'm studying Spanish and Secondary Education and Communication but while I was in Costa Rica, I had the opportunity to take a class about Marine Biology and Endangered Species. And it was really amazing because although that's not the focus of my studies, I was able to pursue that curiosity to also gain knowledge about things that are completely unrelated to my field but very intriguing as well.
