Engineering at Carthage
Students in the Engineering program at Carthage learn how to design, analyze, and test devices and processes that solve human problems. With a heavy focus on hands-on work, students begin getting real project experience as soon as they enter the program. Through partnerships between Carthage and companies around the area, students work on real projects that have a real impact on our community.
New in Fall 2023, the Carthage Engineering Center offers best-in-class equipment, design studios, and a MakerSpace where engineering majors can cultivate valuable skills that they will use throughout their engineering careers.
Carthage offers a B.A. and B.S. in engineering. A non-discipline-specific program, students learn skills that will make them a versatile and valuable asset to engineering teams. With Carthage’s liberal arts focus, students will learn not only valuable mathematics, science, and technical skills but also the communication and problem-solving skills to become leaders in the field.

Engineering problems are messy. Real problems don't know disciplinary boundaries. When you think about an engineering team, we need people who can talk across the boundaries of engineering disciplines. This is where I think we're going to be able to really shine. Carthage has two programs. Neither of our programs are discipline specific. And it allows them to really be positioned for success. However they choose to go once they graduate, our approach to engineering is project based and so our students are going to have real project experience from the first moment they enter our program.
We're able to create an environment for them where they're able to ask questions to outside industry. And so we're able to prototype build, and then we're able to test, being able to get your hands dirty, have this real application, this product at the end of your time is extremely valuable.
Those experiences are going to train our students to be project ready for the workforce the moment they graduate. The companies that we've talked with are excited for that because they recognize that the students will be able to contribute right away to their engineering teams. Some of our local companies are very excited to get our students opportunities to see what engineering is like in a whole variety of different areas and build up opportunities to get involved in a real engineering firm before one even graduates.
Our sophomores this year are working with engineered exhaust solutions. They have an opportunity to develop solutions that could go on actual product in field in the future. Carthage College is special because our students are going to work on real projects with real people that have real impact. You're gonna do that from day one. And I'm gonna do it through all four years.
