Arts at Carthage
The arts are thriving at Carthage:
- In our classrooms, where students are guided toward excellence in studio art, music, theatre, musical theatre, dance, and graphic design.
- On our stages, where internationally-renowned playwrights and musicians collaborate with students for performances and world premieres.
- In our galleries, where established and emerging artists show their work throughout the year.
Carthage awards scholarships ranging from $500 to $13,000 per year to admitted students who excel in visual and performing arts. Carthage’s location between Chicago and Milwaukee offers opportunities for Carthage students to explore hundreds of theatres, galleries, and museums within an hour’s train ride — and also gain invaluable experience auditioning and working in either arts-rich metropolitan area.

At Carthage, we have this awesome location right between Chicago and Milwaukee. We have everything from theater to music theater to orchestra, band, and of course choir is here in Carthage. We also have an awesome art department with everything from digital media and communications to animation even.
A lot of professors do lead interim study-abroad opportunities. I know in the past Music Ed students have gone to Hungary to study at the Kodai Institute. Most recently, the Carthage Choir traveled to Ireland and the Wind Orchestra regularly tours Japan.
The professors at Carthage really are very well-versed in the industry. My voice teacher, Dr. Lena Batman, she was actually on Broadway, she was on the Phantom of the Opera, and just has a really great professional career.
So it's really awesome to work with those professors, get feedback from the professionals in the industry. So lots of our Music Theater professors have experience in the real world.
A lot of my practices take place in the Recital Hall. It's this huge hall where there's a piano and there's a lot of room, a great audio space for us to sit down in and rehearse and go over our different songs.
And in the classroom center, there's like this huge stage where we can practice there on a larger scale for bigger audiences. And then we have private vocal rooms. So I love going into the private vocal studios and practicing my singing. We have at least six on campus in different locations.
So at Carthage, there are over 200 performing arts events every year so that's everything from your Choral Festival Concert to student performance recitals, but that also includes four main stage plays, two dance shows, two operas, three musicals, some in a smaller venue and some on the main stage.
And that doesn't even include the co-curricular things. So we have a Student Improv Troupe. We have a student Neo Futurists Troupe we have Student Acapella Choirs. So there's both a place that with faculty and guest director-led projects as well as the sandbox for the students to play in and to create themselves. So there are a lot of opportunities to engage here at Carthage.
